Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some quick answers to common questions we get at Pathlight. If you have a question that is not answered here, please contact us at (413) 732-0531 or info@pathlightgroup.org.
What is Pathlight?
Pathlight is a 501(c)3 non-profit Massachusetts corporation with headquarters in Springfield. It was founded in 1952 by five mothers of children with developmental disabilities. Pathlight was the first organization in Hampden County dedicated to serving individuals with intellectual disabilities. The founders shared a dream that their children would live and grow as valued members of their communities, despite the fact that this vision challenged prevalent societal expectations that people with developmental disabilities were best separated from their families and placed in institutions. Pathlight operates throughout western Massachusetts and employs over 600 dedicated people.
Who does Pathlight serve?
Pathlight serves children, teens, and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families.
How do referrals into Pathlight programs and services work?
Eligibility and referrals for service are made by state and/or local contracting agencies. Some Pathlight programs, including Whole Children, Milestones recreation, Family Empowerment, and Autism Connections, are open to the public without a referral. These programs may charge a fee for their classes and activities.
Is there a cost to using Pathlight programs and services?
Many services provided by Pathlight are funded through contracts held by the organization with a variety of state agencies. Individuals must be determined to be eligible for these services and referred by the appropriate agency. Our Family Support programs offer classes, workshops and educational opportunities to the public, some for a fee.
How is Pathlight funded?
The majority of the organization’s revenue comes from contracts with state agencies including the Massachusetts Department of Developmental Services and the Massachusetts Department of Medical Assistance. Some of Pathlight’s Family Services programs rely on private pay for their services. Pathlight also raises money from a broad network of generous donors to support innovations and capital projects. We gratefully accept support from individuals, businesses, and foundations.
